India has emerged as a major producer (14th largest) of motor vehicles producing over 638 000 passenger cars during the 1999-00 fiscal. In addition, 3 776 778 two-wheelers (motorcycles, scooters and mopeds), 210 000 three-wheelers (about 50 % of the global market), 171 319 commercial vehicles and some 250 000 tractors (making India the largest tractor producer/market in the world!) were produced. Car exports totalled 22 913 in 2000-01 and 2/3-wheeler exports amounted to 127 401 units. India has removed all quantitative restrictions (exception: three+ year old cars banned) on automobile imports. The Indian automotive components industry recorded a turnover of 163 billion Rupees (1999-00) and exports of USD 413 million during fiscal 2000-2001.
MARUTI UDYOG LTD. (MUL)
Maruti Udyog is India's largest automobile company. The company is a joint venture with Suzuki of Japan, and has written a runaway success story. When Maruti entered the Indian car market, it sought to provide high quality fuel-efficient, low-cost vehicles and total customer satisfaction. These objectives shaped the company's policies and approach to quality.
MUL is by far the largest car manufacturer in India with a turnover of 92.5 billion Rupees in the 2000-01 fiscal. Total vehicle sales amounted to 344 000 units in fiscal 2000-01 incl. exports of 15 025 cars (2000-01). MUL's three auto plants have an installed capacity to manufacture 350,000 cars pa. A record 44 167 MUL cars were sold in March 2000.Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan has a 50 % stake in MUL.

India's largest (1998-99 total income 66 billion Rupees) and the world's 6th largest commercial vehicle manufacturer. Telco sold 199,115 vehicles during 1999-00.

HYUNDAI MOTOR INDIA LTD.
Hyundai's India car plant is its largest integrated manufacturing facility with a capacity to manufacture 120,000 cars, and only one (at Irungattukotai near Chennai) outside of South Korea. HMIL sold 86 000 cars in 2000 making it India's second largest passenger car manufacturer after MUL. HMIL manufactured its 200,000th car on June 12th 2001.

The $72 billion Daewoo Group of South Korea has so far invested some 35 billion Rupees in its India auto subsidiary DMIL. DMIL's plant is located at Surajpur, U.P. DMIL's turnover was 4.41 billion Rupees in 1997-98. DMIL sold 42 960 cars during the fiscal 2000-01. DMIL exported 1170 cars in 1999-00 mainly to Egypt, Italy and Sri Lanka.

Cielo Executive/Nexia (manual & autom. trans.) - 1.5L 4D Daewoo Cielo (Nexia features a 1.5L 92 bhp DOHC engine). A CNG version is also available.

HSCI manufactures the Honda City, a 4D 1.3L/1.5L 16V sedan (LXi/EXi), launched in January 1998. The company has invested 4.5 billion Rupees in the project. The plant is located in Greater NOIDA, U.P. Honda-Siel sold 9 698 cars in 1999-00. The Honda Accord has been launched.
HINDUSTAN MOTORS LTD.
A Calcutta-based car manufacturer with manufacturing facilities at Haora (West Bengal), Pithampur (Madhya Pradesh) and Thiruvallur (Tamil Nadu). HM produced 26 860 vehicles during the 1999-00 fiscal.

Mitsubishi Lancer (93 hp 1.5L Petrol/68 hp 2.0L Diesel) - Lancer is being produced at HM's Rs 3 billion 103 acre state-of-the-art Thiruvallur (Tamil Nadu) plant with a capacity to produce 24,000 cars per annum. HM sold 7993 Lancers in 2000.

Ford Ikon 1.6 L petrol, 1.8 L diesel. Ikon is manufactured at Ford India's new auto plant located at Maraimalai Nagar near Chennai. The plant has a capacity to manufacture 60,000 vehicles. A 1.3 litre petrol version (58 bhp Endura engine) is also available. Over 38,000 Ikons have been sold till date (06/01).

Ford Escort 1.6 L petrol & 1.8L Diesel (production has stopped). Around 15,000 Escorts have been sold in India till date.
FIAT INDAUTO LTD. (FIL)
A Mumbai-based car manufacturer (a Fiat India Automobiles - PAL joint venture). Ind Auto's plant is located at Kurla, Mumbai and has a capacity to manufacture 60,000 vehicles. FIL sold 20 751 during the 1999-00 fiscal.
